HOW TO JOIN THE THISTLE PIPE BAND
The Band has its own schools for the different disciplines needed. The recruit pays a small introductory fee, simply to show the seriousness of his intentions, and is then entitled to ten lessons with music, i.e. the technique to play and drill/deportment as used in the British Army.
The lessons completed, the recruit, together with representatives from the Band, discuss the possibility of joining the Band. Provided both parties agree, all future training is cost-free. Already from the very first lesson the necessary instruments are provided by the Band with no costs to the recruit. The uniforms to be used at performances are owned and provided for by the Band.
Training sessions are held every Monday and Thursday evening at the Royal Military Academy of Karlberg (close to the Underground and commuter trains). Earlier military or musical experience is of course a merit in this context, but no formal requirement.
